Important Information About Prozac

Prozac, also known by its generic name fluoxetine hydrochloride, is a popular FDA-approved antidepressant medication belonging to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which work by restoring the balance of chemicals in the brain.
One such chemical is called serotonin, a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain that many scientists believe plays a big part in the development and severity of depression.
Prozac works by slowing the reabsorption of serotonin after its release, thereby boosting the levels of the chemical available in the brain.

Why Use Prozac

Prozac is widely prescribed for the treatment of depression (including pediatric depression), obsessive-compulsive disorder (in both adult and pediatric populations), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), hypochondriasis and body dysmorphic disorder.

The popularity of the drug may be attributed to the fact that cases of overdose from the drug have been rare.

Studies have also shown that it causes fewer adverse heart-related events (such as a drop in blood pressure or unusual rhythm), fewer anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, urinary retention) than tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and it is less likely to cause drowsiness or weight changes also associated with the older TCAs.

What about using L-Tryptophan a natural amino acid that helps the body make serotonin...... It has really worked for me... It helps me get the REM sleep needed for the brain to manufacture this naturally occuring chemical.

y daughter was on Prozac many years ago and she often told me it made her feel worse. Suicidal thoughts actually increased. From what I understand Prozac also contains flouride and flouride increase the bodies uptake of aluminum...so where's the justice? The heavy metal toxicity is a very real concern. I feel that the benefits do not outway the risks. So much to think about.
